Cebu Chamber awards Taiheiyo CEO as 'Socially Responsible Entrepreneur'

The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has awarded Satoshi Asami, president and chief executive officer of Taiheyo Cement Philippines, Inc. (TCPI), as "Socially Responsible Entrepreneur of the Year" during the 2012 Grand Chamber Awards Night last june 29.

CCCI gave Asami the recognition for the initiatives of TCPI under his leadership in adhering to corporate social responsibility, especially towards the company's stakeholders in San Fernando, Cebu where TCPI operates its cement manufacturing facilities and sources its raw materials.

The awarding concluded the celebration of the annual Cebu Business Month this year. The annual award is held to honor institutions and industry players that helped shape the local economic landscape, noted a statement from CCCI.

"They are the icons who demonstrated entrepreneurial excellence despite the economic challenges", CCCI president Prudencio Gesta said during the awards night at the Marco Polo Hotel Cebu.

Missions

Together with TCPI materials supplier Solid Earth Development Corp. (SEDC), the Cebu subsidiary of Taiheiyo Cement Corp. of Japan has long put in place a Social Development Management Program (SDMP) that rolls out programs that benefit the community.

These include the medical missions conducted two to three times a year in one barangay after another, the scholarship program for college and high school students, livelihood programs as the ongoing and now expanding goat-raising project, and some community improvements.

Fifteen years ago in 1997, the cement operations in San Fernando earned from CCCI the "Business for Environment Award" because of the social development program the company has since then incorporated in its environmental enhancement initiatives, especially in involving the community.

In the following year in 1998, CCCI again bestowed the company the "Employer of the Year" award when the company held on with its human resources to keep them employed and reduced other costs during the Asian regional financial crisis.

For the award this year, Asami dedicated the award to all TCPI and SEDC employees as well as to the company's contractors, suppliers and distributors for adhering to and their steadfast support to and cooperation in promoting and pursuing the company's social responsibility.
