Taiheiyo makes a “3-peat” at mines awards for operating “safest plant”
For the third time, Taiheiyo Cement Philippines, Inc. (TCPI) earned an awad for  operating the “Safesr Mineral Processing Plant” (cement plant category) in the country.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of  the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) hande the award during the Safest Mines and Quarries Awards, considered as the Oscars equivalent  in the Philippine mining imdustry, last November 14.
Minerals supplier Solid Earth Development Corporation (SEDC) was also awarded for having achieved “0” Lost Time Accident covering the fiscal year July2008-June2009.
The awarding highlighted the 56th National Mine Safety and Environment Conference of the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment association (PMSEA) at Camp John Hay in Baguio City that had DENR Secretary Jose L. Atienza, Jr. as guest speaker.
MGB Director Horacio C. Ramos personally handed the award Romeo M. Gebilaguin, TCPI environment and safety section head, before their colleagues in PMSEA.
TCPI first earned the award in 2006, then again in 2007 when SEDC landed third place in the “Safest Quarry Operation” award.
“Earning the award again in 2009 shows  the commitment of the compay to operate within accepted international stamdards,” declared Katsuo Ono, TCPI senior vice president for production and plant manager.
Engr. Nilo R. Yap, environment and safety senior manager, thanked all TCPI and SEDC employees for their cooperation and commitment, especially in promoting the company’s integrated management system on quality, environmental and occupational health and safety management.
He also recognized management’s continuing support  and involvement in saety programs. “ Let us continue to improve and learn from the incidents of this year and aim higher,” he said in a message of all employees.
The plant in South Poblacion, San Fernando, Cebu also received he Business for the Environment Award that the Cebiu Chamber of Commerce and Industry bestowed 12 years ago.
PMSEA groups mining companies, quarries and cement plant operators, suppliers, service contractors, professional organizations and government agencies that advocates a national campaign for occupational safety and against health and environmental hazards of mining and its related operations.
Bestowed annually, the Safest Mines and Quarries Awards has the primary objective of creating greater consciousness, awareness and elimination of occupational and environmental hazards in mining operations.

It recognizes the Safest Surface Operations, Safest Underground Operations,Safest Quarry and Cement Plant Operations, Safest Mineral Processing Operations, Safest Mining Operations and company with the most Improved Safety Performance.
