FEEDING. Health workers monitor the weight of a child, while three others feed themselves in the current 3-month daily feeding conducted by the Taiheiyo Cement group in five barangays in San Fernando, Cebu.

TAIHEIYO Cement Philippines, Inc. (TCPI) is giving attention to 159 malnourished children in five stakeholder barangays in San Fernando, Cebu, feeding them everyday since January.

A comprehensive and progressive feeding program, it will be completed in three months or in 78 calendar days, disclosed Gines T. Boltron, community relations officer.

“We are feeding these children everyday, Mondays to Saturdays, and we intend to finish the series seeing these kids weighing how they should in their age,” he said.

Employees of TCPI and its materials supplier Solid Earth Development Corp. (SEDC), feed the children with “lugaw” (local porridge) enriched with Hi-protein toppings along with Bear Brand “Busog Lusog” cereal drink.

The feeding program started on January 22, 2010 in Barangay Panadtaran where 63 malnourished kids are now being fed.

Barangay Cabatbatan followed on the following day with 14 children registered in the program.

Barangays North Poblacion and Tañañas followed on January 25 with 36 and 31 children, respectively, then Barangay Ilaya by January 26 with 15 children being since attended to.

All the feeding activities are conducted in the barangay hall or health center with the assistance of the assigned barangay health workers.

Boltron said the weight of these beneficiary malnourished children are monitored and recorded weekly to determine if they have improved, and also to identify who needs closer attention.

TCPI and SEDC first conducted a comprehensive and progressive feeding program from July 2005 to September 2006. It fully benefited 250 children from 12 stakeholder barangays.
